Kevin Nilson
Clinical Social Work Intern
“It is my goal to invite clients into my space with warmth, respect, and appreciation for their similarities and differences.”
I am a Master of Social Work student at the University of Michigan, currently in my internship at COR Counseling. I specialize in providing individual services to children, teens, and adults. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science from Western Michigan University, and have just under a decade of experience working for local and State government. Within this time, I have worked as a mentor for at-risk youth and as a benefit specialist for individuals and families. I have also served as a volunteer chairperson for my state of Michigan worksite in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community and an affirming therapist.
Prior to my work in government and pursuing my MSW, I owned and operated a martial arts, self defense, and fitness business for twelve years. This experience allowed me to work with individuals and families of all ages and backgrounds. Through this, I had the honor of connecting with and championing others as they reached their goals. I also developed insight on working with youth and adolescents, engaging with them to build self-esteem and appreciation for themselves.
These past experiences have since inspired me to work with children and teens as a therapist in play therapy. Through this, I aspire to establish trust and connections that will heal wounds through games, stories, activities, music, comic books, and other forms of media. My past and continued studies have focused on diversity, play/geek/sandtray therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing. I am open to partnering with children, parents, and individuals with backgrounds in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma, depression, and anxiety. I also hold space to assist foster and adoptive youth, their parents, and also members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community.
